About Longreach Regional Council

The Longreach Regional Council is a new Local Government organisation formed from the Queensland Government's decision to amalgamate Shires across the state. As a proactive and innovative organisation, Longreach Regional Council endeavours to seek opportunities and identify projects that benefit the surrounding communities. Specifically, the Council is committed to providing a healthy, safe, habitable and sustainable environment through the provision of social and cultural services and essential infrastructure.

About the Opportunity

Longreach Regional Council is seeking an experienced Tourism Coordinator to join their Community Services – Tourism team in Longreach.

Reporting to the Manager Community and Economic Development, the primary objective of this role will be to lead and manage the tourism development team within Council and implement the strategic and corporate plan of the Longreach Regional Council, with respect to tourism matters and the Council’s policies and procedures.

More specifically, some of your key responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinating the implementation of strategies from the Marketing Plan ;
  • Controlling the Council’s tourism budget;
  • Reviewing and updating the Council’s tourism literature (inc. brochures, advertisements  and annual information guide in conjunction with the Longreach Regional Tourism industry etc);
  • Developing and managing the Information Centre – presenting information/advice on products and services of the Council area in a stimulating and organised manner;
  • Managing tourism marketing projects inc, coordinating the Council’s tourism website development and maintenance;
  • Creating a vision and implementing strategies for tourism interpretation, maintenance and development of the Powerhouse Museum;
  • Assisting in sourcing funds for events and projects consistent with Council’s adopted corporate and operational plan within the tourism area;
  • Assisting in the placement and preparation of promotional advertising for Council activities;
  • Fostering and contributing to a team approach in the Tourism Team.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of the tourism industry, in particular new product development, tourism marketing and the implementation of tourism development strategic plans, preferably within a local government tourism framework. Experience working within the tourism sector is paramount to this role preferably with a detailed understanding of the Outback.

Most importantly along with a passion for the tourism industry, you will hold tertiary qualifications in Tourism, Marketing, Public Relations or a related Business discipline and/or previous experience working within the marketing, promotions or public relations field.

To be considered, you will have high project management, organisation and planning skills with a strong ability in prioritisation. The Council is looking for someone with highly developed budget management and report writing sills including the ability to research and develop reports, making sound recommendations based on their research and local industry knowledge.

Your highly developed communication skills and experience in staff supervision will assist you in managing staff development, training, assessment and conflict resolution as well as connecting and networking with external stakeholders.  

Computer skills in Microsoft Suite and a current Class C Driver’s Licence are essential.
