About the Organization
As part of the Athabasca Tribal Council, the Fort McKay First Nation (FMFN) is composed of members who are of Cree and Dene heritage. Currently, there are 619 Fort McKay Band Members and approximately 400 people that are currently residing in Fort McKay.
FMFN is a leader in working collaboratively with industry, and holds successful and long established relationships with the various mining companies operating adjacent to its land. Given the importance of its relationship with industry and its impact on the community, FMFN recently created a new organization—the Sustainability Department—dedicated to building greater efficiency and community access to information and services while continuing its tradition of working with industry for the betterment of the community.One of the many successful community initiatives is the Fort McKay e learning centre: an alternative high school which offers online, distance learning, traditional and contemporary arts and crafts courses and programs.
About Fort McKay, Alberta
The community of Fort McKay, AB is situated in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, approximately 65 kilometers north of Fort McMurray, off of Highway 63.
As a community, Fort McKay boasts a longstanding history dating back to 1820 when the Hudson Bay Company first built a trading post near the current site. In 1912, the community was named after Dr. William Morrison McKay—Alberta's first resident doctor and the first President of the Northern Alberta Medical Association.
Because of its geographic location, Fort McKay has had many opportunities to work with several oil sands industries by developing its own companies. Fort McKay has seized opportunities for participation in the economy to create sustainable, long-term growth and development.
About the Opportunity
Are you a highly motivated, flexible and patient individual who loves to work with youth? Fort McKay First Nation is seeking a team oriented individual to work as a full time High School Math & Science Tutor. You will tutor students in basic, intermediate and advanced High School math and science. This will involve enforcing the rules of a classroom setting while being empathetic to student needs.
Specifically, you will:
- Work with individual students or groups of students both in the classroom and other settings;
- Prepare materials and perform clerical tasks;
- Assist students to integrate into the classroom and school;
- Motivate and encourage students to participate in learning activities;
- Use effective instructional strategies to help students with lessons and assignments;
- Observe and report student behavior and progress;
- Collect and prepare learning materials and use technology (computers, audiovisual equipment, etc.) to support student learning.
This challenging and rewarding opportunity will suit someone who has a Bachelor of Science Degree along with the ability to deal effectively with students or groups of students who are often active and demanding.
A background as a High School Math and Science Teacher/Tutor or equivalent would be preferred. A College Diploma or University Degree in a related discipline would be highly desirable, as is the ability to speak, read and write Cree or Dene. Experience working with a First Nations Community would be a definite asset.

This role follows the traditional high school academic schedule.
