About Quesnel and Williams Lake, BC

Quesnel is located in the Cariboo District of British Columbia. The city is located between the cities of Prince George and Williams Lake and is on the main thoroughfare to Northern BC and the Yukon.

To the east of Quesnel lies Wells, Barkerville, and Bowron Lake Provincial Park, a popular canoeing destination in the Cariboo Mountains.

Quesnel offers numerous recreational activities, including its District Arts and Recreation Centre, featuring a family friendly aquatic facility, weight room, arena, and more. The Quesnel Indoor Sports Centre is B.C.'s largest freespan indoor turf building, boasting two 80' X 180' playing surfaces and 48' feet from floor to ceiling. Williams Lake, is a city in the interior of British Columbia, located in the central Cariboo region. It is the largest urban centre between Kamloops and Prince George, with a population of 11,150 in city limits.

Williams Lake hosts the annual Williams Lake Stampede, which takes place over the Canada Day long weekend and is home to Rick Hansen, the Canadian paraplegic athlete.

The City of Williams Lake boasts 13 municipal parks ranging from neighborhood tot lots to large multi use parks. From walking trails to playgrounds and ball fields, the City’s network of parks and trails provides something for everyone.

The Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex is the centre for recreation activities in Williams Lake and caters to all ages. The complex is complete two ice rinks, a swimming pool, and a fitness centre. 

About the Opportunity

New Gold is currently seeking a First Nations Coordinator to join their Blackwater Gold team, based either in Quesnel or Williams Lake, BC

Your primary responsibility will be to work with local First Nations communities to identify opportunities to empower their communities through the development of independence and sustainability. You will primarily focus on the development and implementation of business development contracts, employment, education/training, scholarships, and community development.

You will also be required to:

  • Maintain mutually beneficial relations with local First Nations communities;
  • Coordinate and facilitate meetings between First Nations and New Gold management;
  • Identify & assess the needs and capabilities of the First Nations communities and how New Gold can support them to build a mutually beneficial relationship;
  • Work with Human Resources to develop a First Nations recruitment and training strategy;
  • Promote collaborative partnerships to enhance First Nations with personal development and job readiness skills;
  • Develop effective processes to communicate & respond to contract opportunities;
  • Foster First Nations entrepreneurs and identify possible business development resources;
  • Research funding sources to further education/training opportunities;
  • Mentor and coach current and potential First Nations employees;
  • Promote First Nations cultural awareness within New Gold;
  • Coordinate information sessions in First Nations communities;
  • Coordinate closely with consultants concerning the stakeholder engagement and consultation program;
  • Ensure the Project management team is aware of issues that may affect project activity;
  • Participate in CSR activities related to First Nations;
  • Collaborate with the Environmental Director to develop approaches to the inclusion of First Nations input to the Permitting process;
  • Collaborate with the technical team to ensure that First Nations Traditional Knowledge is considered during the site development and design processes; and
  • Liaise with legal counsel to ensure that proper First Nations consultation is being completed and documented.

To apply for this role you must have ability to work within both industry standards and the First Nations culture. In addition to this, you will also have experience working with First Nations communities, council, administration, education/training institutions and stakeholders.

New Gold is seeking a strong team player with the ability to prioritize, manage multiple tasks and handle high stress incidents. To be successful in this role you will need highly developed communication and strong relationship building skills.

The ideal candidate will have a 4-year Bachelor's degree in a related field and experience overseeing similar types of agreements. Candidates with an equivalent combination of formal education and experience are encouraged to apply.
