About the Organization

Blueberry River First Nations is covered under Treaty 8 and was recognized as the St. John Beaver Band in 1950. The name originates from the abundant supply of blueberries found in the valley by the river.

The main community, which is comprised of two reserves, is located on Blue Berry River I.R. No.205, approximately 80km northwest of Fort St. John. Facilities available on the reserve include a band office, band hall, elementary school and headstart building, gymnasium, firehall, and garage. The Blueberry River First Nations has just completed a 10 million dollar state-of-the-art facility.

About the Opportunity

In this challenging and rewarding role reporting to the First Nations Band Administrator, you will manage and lead the Blueberry River First Nations Land and Natural Resource Department to achieve the goals of the treaty, environmental sustainability, and land management.

More specifically, you will:

  • Participate and lead strategic planning for lands related issues;
  • Manage, improve and protect the BRFN traditional area;
  • Monitor activities of industry; oil and gas, forestry and mining;
  • Develop, implement and maintain information management systems;
  • Follow applicable legislation, policies and operational guidelines to manage on and of reserve land activities;
  • Monitor all leases, permits, licenses to ensure terms & conditions are being met;
  • Develop, negotiate and process land lease agreements, sub-leases, permits, rights of way, additions to reserve proposals, allotments, transfers and other legal documentation;
  • Monitor and authorize expenditures within approved budgets;
  • Seek out funding opportunities through external agencies in support of operations;
  • Provide information to members and third parties regarding the status and issues related to land;
  • Acts as a BRFN representative on various committees as identified;
  • Maintains confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of BRFN;
  • Supervises the work and development of LNR staff, including hiring, disciplinary action, layoffs and termination of employees/contractors under; and 
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as necessary in the performance of the position, and as assigned by the Band Administrator. 

You will have a Degree in either Planning, Land Administration, Land and Resource Management or equivalent experience. 5+ years' experience in a similar field is preferable and experience with/knowledge of First Nations Treaty Rights is essential.

In this varied and challenging position, you must have the capacity to analyze, prepare and reconcile budgets and expenditures. The ability to adapt to changing priorities will be vital to your success and knowledge of land registration and administration principles/procedures would be considered an asset.

Importantly, you will be highly skilled in the Microsoft Office suite, especially with Word, Excel and knowledge of PowerPoint.
