Fort Simpson is known as the gateway to the Nahanni National Park, which is a 1 hour plane ride away. The community is serviced by two airports, and has twice daily air service to the capitol city, Yellowknife. There is a health centre staffed with nurses and one to two full time doctors, with visiting specialists. A new swimming pool, ice rink, curling rink, ball diamonds and superb golf course with professional greens provide excellent sport recreational opportunities.

Unique to the Village is its mechanical water treatment plant (the only one in the NWT), an ice bridge that melts in spring (replaced by a ferry in the summer), the abundance of majestic hiking trails, fishing, boating, kayaking, and the boundless opportunities to nature watch.
