The Municipality of Pangnirtung 

Located on beautiful Baffin Island, Nunavut, Pangnirtung became a self governing municipal government in 1973. Today, Pangnirtung is a vibrant community of 1,800 residents that is known world-wide for its carvings, tapestries and prints. Surrounded by mountains, glaciers and with access to Auyuittuq National Park, Pangnirtung is equally as famous for its truly spectacular scenery. 

With a full complement of infrastructure and resources, including medical centre, schools and shops, Pangnirtung is also only one of three Nunavut communities with a fish processing plant and a robust Arctic Char and Greenlandic Turbot Fishery. As such, Pangnirtung boasts a small craft harbour.

Accessible by plane, Canadian North and First Air operate daily flights to and from Pangnirtung via Iqaluit.

About the Opportunity  

The Municipality of Pangnirtung has a unique opportunity for an adventurous and experienced Finance Director to join their team in Nunavut

In this senior, leadership role, you will be responsible for maintaining financial, accounting, administrative and personnel services to meet legislative requirements and support municipal operations. This includes preparing financial statements, maintaining cash controls, preparing Payroll and personnel administration, purchasing, maintaining Accounts Payable and managing office operations. 

Working in compliance with the Financial Management Act, Municipal policies and procedures and all Territorial Acts and Legislation, the Financial Director will: 

  • Assist with the preparation of budgets 
  • Implement financial policies and procedures
  • Establish and maintain cash controls
  • Establish, maintain and reconcile the general ledger
  • Monitor cash reserves and investments
  • Prepare and reconcile bank statements
  • Establish and maintain supplier accounts
  • Processes supplier invoices
  • Maintain the purchase order system
  • Ensure data is entered into the system
  • Issue cheques for all accounts due
  • Ensure security for all credit cards and verify charges
  • Ensure transactions are properly recorded and entered into the computerized accounting system
  • Prepare income statements
  • Prepare balance sheets

To qualify for this dynamic role, you will have a Bachelor's Degree in Finance or Business Administration, as well as a professional accounting designation (CA, CGA or CMA). You will also have at least 10 years of relevant experience, ideally in a municipal government setting. 

Proficiency with computers, including MS Office and accounting software, is essential for success in this role. Experience AccPac is an asset.

The ideal candidate will have excellent attention-to-detail and time management skills. Highly organized and capable of working well under pressure, you will have demonstrated ability to thrive in a diverse and fast-paced environment

As a strong communicator, you must be able and willing to use your interpersonal skills to become a proactive member of a close-knit community.  With cross-cultural knowledge and sensitivity, the ability to speak Inukitut is also an asset. 

Finally, the successful candidate will have demonstrated leadership skills and be capable of managing and motivating a team.

In appreciation of your hard work and dedication, you will receive a highly attractive salary of $95,000+ and Northern Allowance of $19,000. Salary is negotiable based on your skills, qualifications and experience.
