About Bella Bella
The island village of Bella Bella is located on Campbell Island, north of Port Hardy on Vancouver Island, and about 3 kilometers north of McLoughlin Bay.
The community has 1,500 people with full access to a large range of outdoor activities centered on the ocean, a daycare, elementary school, high school, hospital, BC Ferries route, airport, RCMP station.
Located on the central coast in the middle of the Great Bear Rainforest, this area is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy fishing, camping, kayaking, and whale watching.
About the Opportunity
Heiltsuk Kaxla Society (HKS) is seeking a Guardianship/Child Protection Worker with a strong background in First Nation practice in Bella Bella, BC.
Working collaboratively with Heiltsuk partners and the Ministry of Child and Family Development (MCFD), you will be responsible for the provision of Child Protection and Guardianship Services to the community of Bella Bella.
This is a unique opportunity to participate in a true cross-agency partnership. This position, while housed with the HKS, will involve a secondment to MCFD while the agency works towards C4 delegation, with possible C6 delegation in the future.
Primary responsibilities of this challenging and dynamic role include:
- Respond to child protection reports;
- Conduct child protection investigations, as required;
- Case management;
- Implement service plans;
- Prepare evidence, court documents and clients for court;
- Guardianship roles and responsibilities; and
- Prepare youth for independence.
The ideal candidate will have a M.S.W., B.S.W., or B.A. in Child and Youth Care. Alternatively, you will have a M.Ed. Counselling/M.A. Clinical Psychology with a practicum in family/child welfare or child and youth mental health. Equivalencies will also be considered.
A minimum C4 delegation is essential for success in this role, as is three to four years of recent experience in child protection and/or protective family services.
With strong understanding of child welfare systems, you will have knowledge of the following:
- Policies, procedures, social work principles and practices;
- Aboriginal Operational Standards Indicators for resource social workers; and
- Relevant legislation.
This role is well suited to an organized individual who has the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines. With outstanding problem solving and communication skills, you will be an aspiring leader who can inspire and motivate others through the provision of training and guidance.
As travel may be required, the successful candidate must have a valid BC Driver’s License and pass a criminal record check.
