About the Opportunity

Currently, Methanex is seeking an Environmental Affairs Advisor to join the team in Medicine Hat, Alberta.

Reporting to the Manager, Responsible Care, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, coordinating and maintaining the environmental management programs at the Medicine Hat site and for ensuring compliance with operating approvals and permits, relevant environmental legislation and regulation, Methanex corporate requirements, and Chemical Industry Association of Canada (CIAC) responsible care commitments. 

Your key accountabilities will include:

  • Developing, implementing, maintaining and auditing an ISO 14001 compliant environmental management system, including all necessary environmental procedures and programs required to ensure regulatory compliance with applicable federal, provincial, and municipal legislation, as well as internal Methanex and CIAC Responsible Care requirements;
  • Coordinating environmental monitoring programs, including the activities of the site-based laboratory and external consultants, related to the monitoring of groundwater, soil, wastewater quality, stack sampling, ambient air quality and vapour control systems, as well as the fugitive emissions leak detection and repair program;
  • Managing consultants for various monitoring and other environmental projects, including requests for proposals, awarding contracts, budgeting, invoice tracking and approval, personnel monitoring and project oversight;
  • Acting as the primary contact for the regulatory/compliance branch, and as the government liaison, for all site-related environmental matters, remaining current with all relevant environmental regulations and legislation, and monitoring proposed and impending changes to legislation and regulations;
  • Completing weekly and monthly environmental performance reporting for site and corporate leaders, as well as providing information to support annual corporate initiatives such as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) reporting, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reporting and corporate social responsibility and sustainability reporting
  • Preparing and submitting the site’s environmental performance reports, as well as emissions and waste inventories, for municipal, provincial and federal government departments and regulators, as well as to the CIAC;
  • Preparing and submitting incident reports related to spills, releases or other non-conformances to the appropriate provincial or federal government entity;
  • Ensuring all environmentally-related government approvals and permits for the site are in place and current, and leading projects to obtain amendments, revisions and/or renewals of those permits and approvals;
  • Providing technical expertise and advice to site management and personnel regarding appropriate measures to ensure compliance and minimize liabilities related to environmental issues, as well as advising project teams on environmental requirements for specific projects; and
  • Actively participating as a member of the Methanex Global Environmental Excellence Team (GEET), the Palliser Airshed Society, and the CIAC Environmental and Quality Committee.

As our ideal candidate, you have an undergraduate degree in environmental engineering or environmental science with specialization in remediation, contaminant management, sampling and monitoring or environmental assessment preferred. You have also completed specialized courses in environmental law; ISO 14001 environmental management systems; groundwater, surface water, and soil sampling/monitoring; contaminant management and remediation; air quality monitoring and management; greenhouse gas quantification and management programs; industrial waste management and classification; and/or management system auditing. 

Along with five years of experience in an environmental advisory role, which preferably includes environmental assessment, regulations and compliance; environmental sampling/monitoring; and/or environmental protection planning, you have demonstrated expertise in managing environmental programs within an industrial setting.

Your detailed working knowledge and experience with Alberta provincial and Canadian federal environmental legislation and regulatory requirements is supported by demonstrated competency in managing multiple projects and consultants, including the project phases of request for proposal, contract assignment, budgeting, budget tracking, work flow monitoring and project completion. Strong technical writing skills are also required.
