Your New Role

The Town of Lake Cowichan has an exciting opportunity for a Public Works Foreman to join our team in Lake Cowichan, BC

Reporting to the Superintendent of Public Works and Engineering Services, you will supervise and oversee the operations and maintenance of the Public Works and Parks Department, including roads, water, storm and sanitary sewers, solid waste collection and fleet management.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Planning, organizing and supervising the public works crew daily operations and evaluating the operations of the Public Works Department
  • Planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating the performance of support staff
  • Interpreting construction drawings and design drawings
  • Preparing costs estimates and developing specifications and bid documents for public works, parks and public utilities-related designs, construction and maintenance projects
  • Recommending policies, procedures, and programs for roads, sewage works, streetlights, drainage, garbage collection, facilities maintenance and parks operations
  • Directing and participating in analyses and preparing recommendations regarding the construction and maintenance of the public works facilities and capital project development

To apply for the role, you will need the following qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in municipal works 
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in crew supervision
  • Previous water and sewer experience

The following are assets, but are not required:

  • A Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology
  • Experience working in a union environment
  • Experience as a Foreman in a municipal environment

You will also need to be able to read and interpret blueprints and be comfortable costing/estimating. An Environmental Operations Certificate (EOCP) is highly desired. 

The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of stakeholders of different levels is important. Similarly, strong communication skills and problem-solving skills are essential.
