About the Organization

NiGiNan Housing Ventures is a registered charity that was formed to address the particular needs and requirements of Indigenous people living in Edmonton. We are dedicated to providing supportive affordable housing opportunities for individuals and families of native ancestry, who have not been successfully served by any other organization in Edmonton.

NiGiNan's goals are to:

  • House and keep Indigenous people housed, while enabling them to create homes for themselves.
  • Improve the quality of life of our residents.
  • Build community and involve our residents in the development and management of their community.
  • Provide residents with a sense of control over their own lives.

About the Opportunity

NiGiNan Housing Ventures has an excellent opportunity to lead, promote and enhance the services and programs of the organization's first development - Ambrose Place. Ambrose Place is one of the most successful programs and housing complexes for Edmonton's formerly hardest to house Indigenous persons.

In this role, you will be responsible for the successful leadership and management of Ambrose Place according to the strategic direction established by the CEO and Board of Directors. 

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Participating with the CEO in developing a vision and strategic plan to guide the organization. 
  • Acting as spokesperson for the organization alongside the CEO and conducting official correspondence on behalf of the CEO as appropriate and jointly with the board as appropriate. 
  • Developing an operational plan which incorporates goals and objectives that work towards the strategic direction of the organization while ensuring that the operations of the organization meet with the expectations of its Clients, Board, and Funders. 
  • Overseeing the planning, implementation and evaluation of the programs and services by ensuring that the programs and services offered by Ambrose contribute to the organization's mission and reflect the priorities of NiGiNan.
  • Overseeing the planning, implementation, execution, and evaluation of special projects by providing supervision to the Housing Support Manager, PDD Manager, Food Services Manager, and Cultural Manager. 
  • Determining the staffing requirements for Ambrose Place management and the delivery of its programs. 
  • Overseeing the implementation of human resources policies, procedures, and practices including the development of job descriptions for all staff.
  • Recruiting, interviewing, and selecting staff that have the right technical and personal abilities to help further the organization's mission. Equally ensuring all staff receive training and implementing a performance management process for all staff which includes monitoring the performance of staff on an on-going basis and conducting an annual performance review. 
  • Working with the CEO and Finance Committee to prepare a comprehensive budget. 
  • Working with the CEO to secure adequate funding for the operation of Ambrose Place by researching funding sources and overseeing the development of fund-raising plans and writing funding proposals to increase the funds of the organization.
  • Ensuring the organization complies with all legislation covering taxation and withholding payments.
  • Communicating with stakeholders to keep them informed of the work of the organization and to identify changes in the community served by the organization.
  • Establishing good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups, funders, politicians, and other organizations to help achieve the goals of the organization.
  • Identifying and evaluating the risks to the organization's clients, staff, management, volunteers, property, finances, goodwill, and reputation and implementing measures to control risks. Equally ensuring that the organization carries appropriate and adequate insurance coverage while also ensuring that staff understand the terms, conditions, and limitations of the insurance coverage.

To qualify for this role you will have a university degree in a related field combined with a minimum of 5 years of progressive management experience in either the profit or nonprofit sector organization. 

The ideal candidate for this role will also possess the following:

  • Knowledge of leadership and management by valued relationship principles as they relate to non-profit/voluntary organizations.
  • knowledge of all federal and provincial legislation applicable to voluntary sector organizations including employment standards, human rights, occupational health and safety, charities, taxation, CPP, EI, health coverage, etc.
  • Knowledge of current community challenges and opportunities relating to the mission of the organization.
  • Knowledge of human resources management, financial management, and project management.
  • Knowledge of the historical impact and colonization effects on First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples.
  • Knowledge of traditional and ceremonial practices of the Cree, Anishinaabe, Dene or Nakota Sioux.

The role will be well suited to adaptable and creative individuals who are capable of establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, in order to achieve the goals of the organization. An individual with a strong client centred focus and strong communication skills will excel in this role. Skills with social media and Microsoft Office will be considered an asset.  

Those with working experience with indigenous communities and language of first nations will be held in high regard.
